Safetipin, a mobile phone application (app) for the safety of women was launched in the City on Sunday to mark National Girl Child Day. The app, which has been devised through a crowd sourcing mechanism, is currently available on Google Play and Apple App Store and will soon be made available on Windows phone. The application helps one mark circles on a map and pin them with three colours – red, orange and green for unsafe, moderately safe and safe areas respectively. Urban Action Internship 2014: Youngsters Grapple with City’s Problems

One often hesitates when asked to walk down the Bore Bank road as the stench, the filth, the garbage pile on the road becomes a major hurdle for citizens. Following the success of previous efforts at Frazer Town, JC Nagar and RT Nagar, the cleanup drive at Bore Bank Road harnessed the power of the citizens. In association with the ward corporator Foujiya Begum and local residents led by Abdul Wajid, they demonstrated how they could fix the problem with a few hours of hard work after a four-day study on how to tackle the problem. 15 Years On, Road Rid of Garbage

Although they had seen BBMP cleaning staff go through the motions over the years, residents of R T Nagar 1st Block under Manorayanapalaya ward were used to the overpowering stench of garbage from the ESI Hospital area. However, on Saturday, they heaved a collective sigh of relief as college students and NGOs joined hands to clean the street and clear the garbage near ESI Hospital. The cleaning drive was launched as part of ‘Swalpa Cleanup Maadi’, a campaign headed by Rajeev Gowda, professor of public policy, IIM Bangalore.
