Spirits soar high as kites go up on Church Street

It was one of the prettiest blue skies of this winter. There were pigeons, crows and a couple of eagles hovering around. Soon, kites of varied hues–pink, lavender, topaz, orange, red–soared high. It was Bengaluru’s own version of a kite carnival. The idea was to bring cheer back to the blast hit Church Street. For a lane that was jolted by a tragedy a fortnight ago, it was kind of a comeback. Civic issues come to fore

Cycle Day at Malleswaram turned out to be a platform to discuss civic issues. After the rally concluded, a huge map of Malleswaram was put on the wall at the starting point. The map was placed by volunteers of Bengaluru Needs You (BNY), a citizens’ movement.
BNY also exhibited more than a dozen photographs of different parts of the city on the theme ‘How people are using public spaces’.

Safetipin, a mobile phone application (app) for the safety of women was launched in the City on Sunday to mark National Girl Child Day. The app, which has been devised through a crowd sourcing mechanism, is currently available on Google Play and Apple App Store and will soon be made available on Windows phone. The application helps one mark circles on a map and pin them with three colours – red, orange and green for unsafe, moderately safe and safe areas respectively. With the agenda to stop pointing fingers and taking action, under the leadership of “Bengaluru Needs You” campaign, residents, students and corporators join hands to fix the black spots in the city. One often hesitates when asked to walk down the Bore Bank road as the stench, the filth, the garbage pile on the road becomes a major hurdle for citizens. Following the success of previous efforts at Frazer Town, JC Nagar and RT Nagar, the cleanup drive at Bore Bank Road harnessed the power of the citizens. It reiterated the core belief of the “Bengaluru Needs You” initiative– that lasting change can only occur when citizens collaborate with civic bodies and participate in transformation of the city. Prof. M. Exemplifying how residents can take up matters in their own hands to improve their local and civic conditions, a group of citizens under the guidance of Resurgent India gave an impressive make over to Manorayanapalya, C Main, Chamundi Nagar Main road, in RT Nagar on Sunday. The locality was in a mess for over eight years, when Resurgent India chairman Rajeev Gowda (also professor of public policy, IIM-Bangalore) decided to take the matter with the residents and give the place a make over with their own hands. In association with the ward corporator Foujiya Begum and local residents led by Abdul Wajid, they demonstrated how they could fix the problem with a few hours of hard work after a four-day study on how to tackle the problem. 15 Years On, Road Rid of Garbage

Although they had seen BBMP cleaning staff go through the motions over the years, residents of R T Nagar 1st Block under Manorayanapalaya ward were used to the overpowering stench of garbage from the ESI Hospital area. However, on Saturday, they heaved a collective sigh of relief as college students and NGOs joined hands to clean the street and clear the garbage near ESI Hospital. The cleaning drive was launched as part of ‘Swalpa Cleanup Maadi’, a campaign headed by Rajeev Gowda, professor of public policy, IIM Bangalore.
